Elizabeth Cotterell graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Botany and Zoology, from the University of Queensland (UQ) in 1994. After this, she worked as a volunteer for the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville, as well as for the East Coast Humpback Survey, before completing her honours degree in fish ecology, from which she graduated with First Class Honours in mid-1997.

Elizabeth has since worked as a research assistant on several humpback whale surveys in south-east Queensland, has given lectures on local history, flora and fauna, has been a tutor of undergraduate marine ecology and invertebrate studies at UQ and worked for the Department of Primary Industries´ Fisheries Group as a Fisheries Scientist for two and a half years.

In 1999, Elizabeth worked in Fiji for two months running a baseline survey of the health of Rainbow Reef, near the island of Taveuni. The resulting report is currently being prepared for publication.

Elizabeth is an avid diver and environmentalist and has been travelling since the end of 2000. This allowed her to be involved in Reef Check Egypt as a Project Scientist in June 2001. She is currently based in the U. K. and plans to be involved in more coral reef projects, including Reef Check, in years to come.
